The below dances are devised by members of the Ballarat Scottish Country Dancing group. There are many things to consider when devising dances  such as transitions between formations,  flow, and how all the dancers are involved in the dance. How the dance is devised, along with the music forms the foundations  for an  enjoyable dance.

A strathspey is defined by the  Scottish Country Dance Society as uniquely Scottish, almost certainly derived from the  reel and  while originally lively has evolved into a slower  tempo dance with steps that are elegant, dignified and smooth.

Jjig's and  reels  are a faster dance  with steps that are lively, light and  having a feel of flight and ease of movement.
